Before the Story Knew

Before the Story Grew
Sandra Long

Verse 1

I wrote to someone down the road, A friend with older eyes, Not only what the day had done But how it moved inside.

The secret weight of one small room, The quiet of one word, The things that felt important then Before the verdicts blurred.

Pre-Chorus

No one needs to name the meaning yet, Conclusions don’t have to fit. I left the door unlocked for later And put the moment in it.

Chorus

Memory can rest upon the page

While curiosity goes back to roam.

I wrote to make some breathing room

So the ideas could find a home.

Before the chapter chose its title,

Before the ending trimmed the truth,

I kept the moments like time capsules

Before the future asked for proof.

Verse 2

They told the past in polished stones: “We were young. We didn’t know.” But no one saved the riverbed Beneath the water’s flow.

What did “young and foolish” feel like On an ordinary day? What little scaffolds held us up? What made the good days stay?

Pre-Chorus

No need to sort the treasure yet From pebbles on the shore. The page can hold them all awhile Until they shine a little more.

Chorus

Memory can rest upon the page

While curiosity goes back to roam.

I wrote to make some breathing room

So the ideas could find a home.

Before the chapter chose its title,

Before the ending trimmed the truth,

I kept the moments like time capsules

Before the future asked for proof.

Verse 3

I kept the habit, cup, and walk, The joke that changed the weather, The strange idea I couldn’t rank But couldn’t lose forever.

A mind can only hold so much Before it starts to spill, So I gave the overflow a home And let the sponge refill.

Bridge (spoken softly)

Field note. Hindsight is an efficient editor. It removes the pauses, labels the boxes, and gives the ending better lighting.

The journals keep the rough cut: A Tuesday at 2:13. A hope that hadn’t learned its name. A question still unanswered. And a younger self who does not need correcting — only wants to be good company.

Final Chorus

Memory had rested on the page

While curiosity went roaming free.

Years later I came back to find Time capsules of attention.

I didn’t ask if they were right, Or tell them what I knew.

I sat beside her in the moment

Before the story grew.

Outro

She wasn’t merely young. She wasn’t merely wrong. She was listening from inside a life That hadn’t moved along.

Still gathering the sediment. Still leaving something true. Still writing to a future friend Before the story knew.
